Clothing as Art Form: The Fashions of Mariano Fortuny

I would have liked to have dinner with Mariano Fortuny. A well-traveled jack of all trades, he was born in Spain, moved to Paris, then on to Venice. He worked as a lighting and theater designer, a painter, and an architect before venturing into the career for which he is best known: fashion design.

Meet the Experts: Cara Elmslie, Director of Discovery Auctions

What I really love about this sale is the huge variety of beautiful things: from the simple yet sturdy country pine furniture with honestly aging chipped paint to the more formal Chippendale and Queen Anne-style pieces crafted to demonstrate the beauty of imported woods.

In setting up the preview, I had a good time picking out some of my favorite pieces and arranging them in a way that really shows you don’t need to have just one single style in your home. You can pick your favorite pieces and mix them up to create your own aesthetic. Country and formal styles can and do go together.
