BOSTON, MA – June 5, 2015Skinner, Inc. is pleased to present its summer Fine Jewelry auction, taking place on June 9th. This sale features over 450 lots of antique and period jewelry, as well as contemporary pieces by Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari and more.

Sapphires and Rubies

Vibrant gemstones are among the stand out offerings in this auction, including an assortment of fine sapphires and rubies.

Sapphires in this auction are highlighted by an antique sapphire and diamond ring made by the New York jeweler Howard & Co. The cushion-cut sapphire weighs 5.44 cts., and is accompanied by gemological certificates from AGL and Gubelin laboratories stating that the country of origin is Kashmir (Lot 463, $100,000 to $150,000).

Additional examples of sapphires on the block include two pieces passed down through prominent American families: a platinum, sapphire, and diamond ring descended through the Warburg family of New York (Lot 438, $40,000 to $60,000), as well as a beautiful platinum, sapphire, and diamond ring, by Tiffany & Co. and descended through the Mellon family (Lot 469, $100,000 to $150,000) both sapphires accompanied by gemological certificates from AGL stating the country of origin is Burma.

Another example of beautiful color in this sale is an antique ruby and diamond necklace, set with 33 rubies weighing approx. 25.00 cts., (Lot 462, $50,000 to $75,000). The necklace is accompanied by an AGL certificate stating that the country of origin is Burma.

The Coda Collection & Art Deco Jewelry

Art Deco jewels are well-represented in this auction. Skinner will offer several important pieces from the Coda Collection, launched by artist and illustrator Corinne Davidov at the Marche aux Puces in Paris in the mid-1960s. A second offering of the Coda Collection will come to auction in the fall of 2015.

One noteworthy highlight from the collection is a fine Art Deco platinum, diamond, and gem-set plaque brooch by Boucheron, circa 1925 (Lot 294, estimated between $15,000 to $20,000). This brooch showcases finely carved mother-of-pearl flowers, cabochon sapphires, and old European-cut diamonds, with floral and foliate engravings on the reverse.

The Coda Collection also spotlights a pair of watches: an Art Deco platinum and diamond wristwatch by Cartier, (Lot 295, $8,000 to $12,000 and an Art Deco platinum, rock crystal, and diamond pendant watch, ($2000 to $2,500). The Coda Collection also boasts a silver and enamel pendant by Etienne David (Lot 292, $1,500 to $2,000).

Further Art Deco pieces up for bid include a lovely Cartier Art Deco platinum and diamond bracelet, (Lot 466, $15,000 to $20,000); an Art Deco platinum and diamond ring, set with a pear-shape diamond (Lot 464, $5,000 to $7,000); and an Art Deco platinum, carved emerald, and diamond ring, set with a high-domed cabochon emerald carved with floral motifs (Lot 465, $4,000 to $6,000).

This sale offers a fine collection of Cartier watches including an 18kt White Gold and Diamond “Ballon Bleu” Wristwatch, (Lot 338, $15,000-20,000); an 18kt Gold and Diamond “Tank Americaine” Wristwatch, Cartier (Lot 340, $15,000-20,000) and an 18kt Gold “Tank Francaise” Chronograph Wristwatch, Cartier (Lot 341, $8000-10,000).

Previews for the auction will be held at Skinner’s Boston gallery on Sunday, June 7th, from noon to 5 PM, and Monday, June 8th, from noon to 7 PM.
