Skinner Offers Fine Jewelry in Boston September 15th

BOSTON, Mass. –September 3, 2009 – www.skinnerinc.comSkinner, one of the nation’s leading auction houses, will host an auction of fine jewelry at its Boston gallery on Tuesday, September 15th at 10:00 a.m.  Highlights include a number of rare and impressive colored diamonds and gemstones – the vast collection of famed ballroom dancer, Verna E. Winegar – and a wide selection of unique Art Deco pieces. More than 650 lots will be featured in the upcoming sale.

Colored Diamonds and Gemstones

The sale features a number of rare colored diamonds and gemstones including a fancy colored diamond and diamond twin-stone bypass ring, set with a fancy intense blue pear shaped diamond weighing 1.26 cts., and a fancy brownish pink diamond weighing 1.20 cts., flanked by graduating diamond baguettes, platinum mount (lot 308, est. $80/120,000); a Burma ruby and diamond ring, Van Cleef & Arpels, prong-set with an oval-cut ruby weighing 8.587 cts., (lot 631, est. $110/130,000).  The accompanying AGL report states that the ruby is natural of Classic Mogok Burma origin with no evidence of heat enhancement.  Additional highlights include; a vivid yellow diamond solitaire, set with an old European-cut diamond weighing 3.65 cts., (lot 390, est. $15/25,000); and a Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring, prong-set with a cushion-cut sapphire weighing 5.58 cts., flanked by tapered diamond baguettes, platinum mount (lot 645, est. $120/140,000).

Additional diamond and gemstone highlights include an 18K white gold, freshwater pearl and diamond necklace, set through with full cut diamonds suspending a fringe of sixty-five pearls (Lot 404, est. $10/15,000); an antique Islamic Intaglio and gem-set pendant necklace by JAR composed of chalcedony and pale sapphire beads and Oriental pearls, suspending an antique chalcedony Islamic intaglio, framed by sapphires and diamond melee, mounted in silver and gold, signed JAR PARIS (lot 422, est. $15/20,000); and an Edwardian diamond bracelet, composed of fancy scrolling links, set throughout with old European and old mine-cut diamonds (lot 624, est. $10/15,000).

The sale also features a number of lovely Cartier pieces including a coral and diamond flower clip/brooch, Paris c. 1960, high relief carved rose centering a full-cut diamond, petals highlighted by pave-set diamond edges, signed Cartier, Paris (lot 652, est. $10/15,000); a citrine and diamond Cartier cuff bracelet, c. 1940, set with a larger citrine and flanked by pave-set diamond scrolls and platinum and 14k gold mount (lot 635, est. $15/20,000); and a matching citrine and diamond ring, (lot 636, est. $4/6,000).

Finally, the sale includes a gorgeous 18k gold, carved emerald, coral and onyx suite, Italy, c. 1970s (lot 573, est. $6/8,000).  The geometric collar is set with onyx and coral panels and bezel-set with carved emerald cabochons, and includes earclips.  The suite, with its bold colors and strong geometric motifs, certainly reflects the Egyptian Revival style of the 1970s, influenced by the 1972 Treasures of Tutankhamen exhibition.

The Estate of Verna E. Winegar

Skinner is proud to offer the estate of Verna E. Winegar in its upcoming Fine Jewelry sale.  Born in Humble, Texas, Verna was a world traveler and visited every country/continent in the world except Antarctica and Greenland.   She was married to Frank W. Winegar, a successful Denver petroleum landman for 46 years.  Until the age of 89, she was an avid and successful ballroom dancer.  Verna died at the age of 93 in her home in Tucson, Arizona.

Highlights of her estate include the aforementioned blue and pink diamond bypass twin-stone ring; an 18k gold fancy-link necklace (lot 210, est. $1,8 /2,200); an 18k gold gem-set Seahorse clip/brooch (lot 211, est. $1,5 /2,000); an 18k gold, diamond and Tahitian pearl bypass bracelet, terminals pave-set with diamond melee and pearls (lot 217, est. $2,5/3,500); a multi-strand 18k gold and emerald bead necklace (lot 262, est. $2,5/3,500); an 18K gold, emerald and diamond ring, bezel set with an emerald cut emerald, framed by diamond baguettes, shoulders set with diamond melee (lot 266, est. $3/4,000); an 18K gold, pink sapphire and diamond ring, prong set with an oval cut pink sapphire flanked by princess cut diamonds (lot 275, est. $8/10,000); and a colored diamond and diamond ring , the pear shape faceted diamond shoulders set with forty-five diamond melee (lot 290, est. $20/25,000).

Verna’s estates also included a set of artist-designed patinated silver brooches by John Iverson (lot 235, est. $3/500).  New York based artist John Iverson works with precious metals, bronze and iron as well as enamel.  His work is held in the collections of Renwick Gallery in Washington DC and the Museum of Art and Design in New York, among others.

Art Deco Gems

Skinner’s upcoming fine jewelry sale will also include a number of art deco pieces for those with an eye for this style.   Highlights include an Art Deco Cartier lady’s platinum, sapphire and diamond wristwatch (lot 593, est. $3/5,000); an Art Deco platinum and diamond bracelet, Maurice Tishman, Inc. set with five old European-cut diamonds, further set with old European cut diamonds and French-cut diamonds (lot 610, est. $8/10,000); an Art Deco lapis, turquoise and diamond brooch, Mauboussin, France, lapis frame centering a shaped turquoise cabochon, old European cut diamond accents and flanked by later cultured pearls (lot 638, est. $3/5,000); and finally an Art Deco platinum, diamond and enamel Jabot, Janesich, Paris, designed as a single and old European-cut diamond arrow piercing a swirling diamond and enamel ring (lot 643, est. $7,/9,000).

Wristwatches

Also highlighted in this sale are a number of lovely watches including a limited edition stainless steel, sapphire, and diamond “Happy Sport” wristwatch by Chopard (lot 525, est. $7/900).  Named the “Happy Hellas” the watch was produced in 2004 in celebration of the Olympics in Athens.  Also offered will be an 18k gold Tiffany & Co. minute repeating open face pocket watch, Patek Philippe (lot 450, est. $8/12,000); and an 18k gold, “about time” pendant watch, Omega, Andrew Grima c. 1969  (lot 176, est. $3/5,000).  In 1969 Omega commissioned Andrew Grima to create a series of watches that would allow the beholder to see time through gemstones.

Additional highlights of the upcoming sale include an artist-designed pop art “modern head” pendant/brooch, Roy Lichtenstein, c 1968 (lot 18, est. $2/3,000); a 14k gold and purple paste necklace, Antonio Pineda (lot 53, est. $1,2 /1,800), a platinum “Turk’s-head knot” bracelet, A.G.A. Correrea & Son (lot 56, est. $4,/6,000); an 18k gold diamond and ancient coin pendant necklace featuring graduating flattened curb links suspending a bronze coin framed by diamond melee (lot 72, est. $2,5/3,500); a mixed metal Tiffany & Co. cuff, c 1970s, designed as geometric motifs (lot 186, est. $8/1,200); a collection of original drawings designed for Seaman Schepps, several of which appear as finished products in Seaman Schepps: A Century of New York Jewelry Design (lot 515, est. $8/1,200); and finally an in impressive antique silver and garnet brooch, 18th century, designed as a large plume collet-set with large pear and oval-shape rose –cut garnets (lot 175, est. $1,2/1,500).  This jewel is likely an aigrette or another type of hair or hat ornament based on its form and style.
