MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – February 11, 2009 – www.skinnerinc.com – On Thursday, February 26, 2009, Skinner, Inc., one of the nation’s leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, will host its inaugural auction in its new gallery in Marlborough, Mass.: a one-day Discovery auction featuring Country Americana. The auction begins at 10 a.m. at 274 Cedar Hill Street, Skinner’s new facility located off exit 23C on Route 495, just north of the Mass Pike. The auction features over 950 lots, the vast majority of which is offerings of Country Americana, including fresh-to-the-market property from local estates and institutions.
Country Americana offerings up for bid include country and painted furniture, selected Victorian American furniture, and formal period American furniture, including a wonderful Wallace Nutting maple slant-lid desk on frame. Also on the block will be American stoneware, quilts, samplers, English ceramics, Chinese export porcelain, early American lighting, a wide array of clocks and timepieces, period glass, weather vanes, a selection of decoys, marine arts, Shaker offerings, folk art, trade signs, country accessories, and a wide selection of paintings and prints.
Skinner is betting that this move to a larger facility in a more urban setting will help streamline operations and provide its existing customers with better service and greater ease and convenience. Additionally, it hopes to expand its customer base to include local buyers.
“With the move to Marlborough, we look forward to showcasing the space with our valued long-time buyers. We also hope to draw some new local buyers into the auction experience,” notes Kerry Shrives, director of Skinner’s Discovery department. “Skinner Discovery Auctions aren’t just a wholesale venue – they’re open to anyone and there’s never a charge to attend.” She continued, “We’re looking to educate consumers about the viability of buying art and antiques at auction. It’s actually more affordable and accessible than most people may think. We also recommend that first time auction goers attend the auction preview, held the day before the sale, to see the property that will be coming up for auction. The preview also gives first-time buyers the opportunity to ask questions of our experts and learn more about the items they are interested in bidding on.”
Held monthly, Skinner’s Discovery auctions offer something for every buyer and seller, every taste and budget. Skinner’s Discovery auctions are a great way for novice antique buyers and first-time auction goers to get their feet wet and experience the fun and affordability of buying at auction.
