Skinner Hosts Discovery Auction in Bolton November 19th & 20th

BOLTON, Mass. – November 6, 2008 – www.skinnerinc.com – Skinner, Inc., one of the nation’s leading auction houses for antiques and fine art will host a two-day Discovery auction on Wednesday, November 19 and Thursday, November 20 in its Bolton, Mass. gallery, conveniently located west of Boston off Route 495 on Route 117.   The auction numbers over 1400 lots and features a wide selection of material culled from over 16 Skinner specialty departments and property from several estates and institutions.  A special offering for November is a particularly fine selection of books and manuscripts, Asian arts, paperweights, American Indian and ethnographic material, and a fine offering of Americana.

Session I: Wednesday Evening

The Wednesday evening session begins at 5:00 p.m. and features over 525 lots.  Highlights include over 50 lots of modern art glass and paperweights, A fine selection of Asian decorative and fine arts including ceramics, jade, hardstone and softstone carvings, bone and ivory figures, snuff bottles, closionne and painting and prints.  Also, over 60 lots of American Indian and ethnographic arts including African, Ethnographic, Pre-Columbian, and Native American pots, rugs, and wood carvings, over 40 lots of English porcelain including Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, and other makers, and over 140 lots of books and manuscripts including prints, maps, and decorative leather bindings.

Session II: Thursday

Thursday’s session begins at 10:00 a.m. and numbers nearly 900 lots.  Session II features a special offering of Americana, including formal and country furniture, and a great selection of high quality reproduction furniture, Styles include folk, Queen Anne, Chippendale, Federal, Classical, and Victorian. Items offered include mirrors, cupboards, slant-lid desks, chairs, stands, tables, and sideboards.  Of note are pieces from Nathan Margolis’s Shop in Hartford, Connecticut, including a Chippendale-style mahogany set of dining chairs, Chippendale-style mahogany mirror, and an Eldred Wheeler tiger maple stand.  Other Americana offerings include quilts, samplers, hooked rugs, woodenware, metalware, stoneware, ceramics, blown and pressed glass, marine arts, and a wonderful selection of trade signs.  Rounding out the auction will be a group of Victorian and other cast iron and metal garden furniture and accessories, and a wide selection of clocks and timepieces, Oriental rugs and carpets, over 200 lots of paintings and prints, and Discovery’s usual broad selection of 18th -20th century furniture and decorative arts.
