Skinner Auctions Asian Works of Art April 24th & 25th

BOSTON, Mass. – April 10, 2009 – www.skinnerinc.com – Skinner, one of the nation’s leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, will host its semi-annual auction of Asian Works of Art this month in its Boston gallery.  The sale will be offered in two sessions: Session I takes place on Friday, April 24th at 4 p.m. and consists of 278 lots; Session II will be held on Saturday, April 25th at 10 a.m. and will offer over a thousand lots of Asian arts.

Session I of the sale features a nice selection of Japanese prints including works by Yoshida Hiroshi and Hasui, to name a few, as well as a good offering of miniature paintings.  Other session highlights include a Korean celadon ewer from the Koryo period (lot 149, est. $1,5/2,500); an 18th century Korean hanging scroll (lot 147, est. $15/20,000); a Turkish sword from the 18th century (lot 251, est. $3/5,000); and a Japanese Cloisonné vase (lot 217, est. $5/700).

The more extensive Session II kicks-off with an extensive assortment of 19th century ivories followed by an even greater representation of Netsuke.  As in all Skinner auctions of Asian Works of Art, collectors of snuff bottles and jadeite carvings won’t be disappointed in the breadth of material.

Several impressive red sandstone pieces grace the sale including an Indian bust from the Gupta period, 2nd-1st century B.C. (lot 468, est. $30/50,000); a Chinese standing figure of Avalokiteshvara from the Sui to T’ang period (lot 483, est. $20/30,000); and a northern Indian torso sculpture from the 13th century (lot 477, est. $10/12,000).  A carved sandstone head from 11th century Cambodia will also be offered (lot 496, est. $18/20,000).

Other sculptures of note include a gilt-bronze image of the Buddha of the future Manjushri from 16th century eastern Tibet (lot 504, est. $1,5/2,500); a carved gray schist figure from China’s T’ang period (lot 485, est. $18/20,000); a Chinese carved wood stele from the Chi period, 6th century (lot 482, est. $8/10,000); and a large stoneware plaque from China’s Ming period, probably Wan Li (lot 488, est. $10/15,000).

Additionally the sale features two rhinoceros horn libation cups from China (lot 554 and lot 555, est. $8/10,000 and $10/15,000 respectively); a large famille juene vase, 19th century, Fen Tsai (lot 935, est. $3/5,000); and a rosewood demilune table with carved foo dog heads (lot 1278, est. $7/900).
