Science, Technology & Clocks Auction Brought in $1.7 Million

Skinner’s November Science, Technology & Clocks auction featuring Militaria brought in $1.7 million, including buyer’s premium. Top selling lots included:

Lot 500: The Bond Shop Astronomical Regulator No. 396, William Bond & Son, Boston, 1868. Of all the time pieces offered, this very important regulator by the Bond Shop led the pack. The Regulator No. 396 has an amazing Boston history tied to it. It was one of three made; No. 394 was developed for the Harvard Observatory, No. 395 for an observatory in Liverpool, England, and No. 396 for the personal use of Bond in his chronometer shop. As the director of the Harvard Observatory, Bond was one of the first to work towards establishing standard time. Descended from the Bond shop Regulator No. 396 was estimated at $300,000 to $500,000 and sold for $539,500.

Lot 212: French Hanger Sword, 1780-83. George C. Neumann’s Battle Weapons of the American Revolution, 1998, Scarlock Publishing Inc., p. 314, 32.ss, suggests that this was the short sword obtained for the American Revolutionary Army Corp of Light Infantry by Lafayette. It was estimated at $600-$800, but sold for an astounding $94,800.

Lot 495: Queen Anne Walnut Tall Clock by William Claggett, Newport, Rhode Island, c. 1725. The earliest American clock offered in the sale, it was estimated at $60,000 to $80,000 and sold for $65,175.00.
