BOSTON, MA – Skinner, Inc. is pleased to announce its first Fine Musical Instruments auction of 2017, taking place in Boston on Sunday, May 14 at 12PM. This auction features 328 lots, including a selection of fretted, wind, and bowed instruments and related books, along with several bass guitars from the estate of legendary bassist and Berklee College of Music professor, Victor Bailey.
Leading an offering of exceptional Italian stringed instruments is a well-preserved Milanese violin circa 1772 by Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi (Lot 198, Estimated between $150,000-200,000), accompanied by certificates from the firms of W.E. Hill & Sons and William Moennig & Son.
Skinner is also pleased to offer a fine Venetian violin circa 1725 by Matteo Goffriller complete with case and bow (Lot 197, $60,000-90,000), as well as a composite violin circa 1723 showcasing the craft of Ferrara maker Alessandro Mezzadri (Lot 196, $10,000-15,000).
In addition, several examples of modern Italian violin making, including works by Giulio Degani (Lot 193, $12,000-18,000) and Gio Batta Morassi (Lot 194, $15,000-25,000).
Fine examples from American, French, and English makers are also represented in the auction, featuring works by Joseph Hel (Lot 195, $15,000-20,000), August Gemünder (Lot 186, $3,000-5,000), and the workshops of W.E. Hill & Sons (Lot 92, $800-1,200).
The auction also offers 38 lots of bow-making materials, from the estate of Violin Society of America award-winning bow maker Randy L. Steenburgen.

Previews for the auction will be held on Friday, May 12, from 12PM – 7PM, Saturday, May 13, from 10:30AM – 5PM, and Sunday, May 14, from 9AM – 10:30AM.
