BOSTON, MA – January 3, 2014Skinner, Inc. is pleased to announce strong results from its December 10 sale of Fine Jewelry. Led by top-selling pieces by Cartier, J E Caldwell and Van Cleef & Arpels, the auction of over 700 lots grossed more than $3.6 million.

“Fine jewelry was in high demand this holiday season, with people flying in from around the world to shop for gifts,” said Victoria Bratberg, Director of Fine Jewelry at Skinner. “From art deco pieces to classic diamonds, colorful gemstones and signed pieces, there was something for everyone at this auction — and excitement to match.”

A signed Van Cleef & Arpels 18kt Gold and Diamond Necklace set a record price for this “Angel Hair” design, bringing $43,200. The stunning necklace was a runaway hit with bidders, more than doubling its high estimate of $15,000

A 14kt Gold, Lapis, and Turquoise Convertible Suite by Cartier also proved popular.  Featuring an adjustable length necklace of tubogas links and matching earclips, this striking set sold for $51,600.

Fine diamond jewelry sparkled, led by an Emerald-cut, 4.23 ct. Diamond Pendant, the proceeds of which – $114,000 – will benefit the non-profit organization Partners in Health.

Pearls and Colorful Gemstones

Natural pearls often draw great interest at auction, and this sale was no exception.  The Chaumet Natural Pearl Necklace, selling for $186,000 – exceeding its high estimate of $60,000. A stunning Tiffany & Co Natural Pearl Necklace, also proved to be a hot-ticket item, selling for $34,800. Skinner realized excellent results for colorful gems, including a Fine Jadeite Bead Necklace, which sold for $100,000, smashing the high estimate of $20,000.

Antique & Art Deco Jewels

Fine Art Deco pieces drew plenty of excitement from bidders, including two signature Cartier pieces: an Art Deco Platinum and Diamond Bracelet featuring French cut diamonds sold for $78,000 while an Art Deco Platinum and Diamond Ring set with an old marquise cut diamond weighing 5.25 cts. sold for an impressive $180,000. An Art Deco Diamond and Gem-set Brooch by J.E. Caldwell & Co., proved to be another highly sought-after item, soaring past the high estimate of $8,000. Designed as a jade jardiniere with marquise-, transitional- and single-cut diamond bonsai tree, this signed J.E.C+Co. piece sold for $46,800.

Not to be overlooked, a Fine Pair of Antique Gold and Diamond Earpendants and Coach Covers led to a heated bidding war, bringing the prong-set earrings with old mine-cut diamonds and original coach covers to a final selling price of $34,000, well over the high estimate of $15,000.
