Diamonds and Period Jewelry from Private Collections featured at Skinner Auction

BOSTON, MA – November 21, 2017 – Please join Skinner on December 5th for our annual holiday auction of Fine Jewelry. Collectors and buyers who wait in anticipation of this auction will be pleased with its breadth and content, featuring over 500 lots of diamonds, colored stones, and antique and period jewelry.

Platinum and Diamond Necklace, Hammerman Brothers, Estimate: $80,000-100,000

Diamonds and Colored Stones
Sapphires from the legendary Kashmir mines are rare in the market, and Skinner is pleased to offer a 6.37 cts. unmounted cushion-cut Kashmir sapphire (Lot 501, $125,000-175,000). Leading the collection of diamond jewelry is a platinum and diamond necklace by Hammerman Brothers weighing approximately 100 cts. with a matching bracelet weighing approximately 75 cts. (Lot 500, $80,000-100,000 and Lot 498, $60,000-80,000). Also on offer are a selection of diamond solitaires ranging in size from 1.00 to 5.00 cts.

Art Nouveau 18kt Gold, Opal, Diamond, and Enamel Pendant/Brooch, Lucien Gautrait, Estimate: $10,000-15,000

Antique and Period Jewelry
Skinner is well-known for bringing examples of antique and period jewelry to auction, and the December sale presents items from several notable collectors. Of particular interest is an Art Nouveau brooch by Lucien Gautrait (Lot 110, $10,000-15,000), once owned by Dr. Viola Wertheim Bernard, a prominent New York psychiatrist. A nearly identical example is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Featured on the catalog cover, a set of dress clips and bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels (lot 233, $45,000-65,000), dates to circa 1940 and is an impressive example of the bold designs that characterized the house at the end of the Art Deco period.
