Robert Rauschenberg’s 1978 Van Vleck Series III will also be offered at auction, made from imagery, fabric, and acrylic on plywood. Rauschenberg created a group of eight wooden panels for Joseph and his wife Louise, as well as Joseph’s six children, each panel representing a different member of the family. Conceived as part of Rauschenberg’s Spreads series, the artist designed the works to hang together in a continuous installation; however, each panel serves as an individual portrait and Van Vleck gifted each child his or hers.
