Skinner’s November 2 and 3 American Furniture and Decorative Arts auction is alive with color, great surfaces, in interesting history. Carefully collected by William McKeever, Pamela and Brian Ehrlich, Tom and Carolyn Porter, Pamela Boynton, and August (Gus) Knapp, the auction offers a rare opportunity to acquire special objects that have seldom been seen before.
1. The Collection of Bill McKeever, Urbana, Ohio
The McKeever collection offers a variety of mostly 17th and 18th century New England furniture and related smalls, especially burl bowls. Carefully selected for surface condition, the collection represents a cross-section of early American country antiques.

2. The Pamela and Brian Ehrlich Collection, Mystic, Connecticut, Part I
The Ehrlich’s 1777 Mystic, Connecticut home was built by Nathan Stanton, a member of one of the founding families of the area, and it spoke to them, guiding the direction of their collecting to focus on New England––especially on New London County, Connecticut. This region was uniquely situated to serve as a crossroads of Colonial America, with influences from all of New England decorative arts coming together to create a ‘quirky,’ recognizable style.”
Beyond being collectors, the Ehrlichs became researchers and storytellers with the aim of passing on an appreciation and love for American art and history to future generations.
They write: “It has now come time to pass on a portion of our life to you who share our interests. We offer a part of our hearts.”

3. The Collection of Tom and Carolyn Porter, Delaware, Ohio
The Porter collection is largely composed of colorful Pennsylvania and Ohio furniture, folk art, and decorations including a variety of polychrome boxes, woodenware, fraktur, Ohio sewer tile pottery dogs, and slip-decorated and mocha wares.

4. The Collection of Pamela Boynton, Groton, Massachusetts
Pam’s focus on 18th and early 19th century New England painted furniture and smalls, all with original surface, is characteristic of her well-known eye for quality and condition.

5. The Collection of August Knapp, Hudson, Ohio
Gus Knapp, a well-known Hudson, Ohio, dealer and artist, saved a number of pieces for his own enjoyment including fine polychrome painted Ohio and Pennsylvania furniture and boxes. In addition to painted boxes and folk art, he also loved unusual early lighting and metal ware and shared his collection through loans to regional museum exhibitions.
