Collector Spotlight: The Joel and Sharon Schwartz Collection

Pair of Marbled Polychrome Pottery Jardinieres, France, 20th century (Lot 1804, Estimate $50-100)

Joel and Sharon Schwartz began collecting together just prior to their marriage. Having purchased a Georgian brick home in Newton, MA, they felt the need to fill it with wonderful objects that were both fun and consistent with the character of the house. A wicker cart with “more panache than utility” as Joel puts it, was their very first purchase. This cart can be found as Lot 1800, the first lot of their collection offered for in our current Discovery – Interiors online auction.

After spending a significant amount of their honeymoon combing the fields of Brimfield, they found themselves hooked on the collecting bug. When travelling to London and Paris, Joel and Sharon would often visit fairs and markets, picking up pieces along the way. Over the years, they became enamoured with Watcombe Motto Ware and Art Deco Quimper pottery, building impressive collections of each. They also appreciated Cornishware as shown in Lot 1833, a comprehensive twenty-seven piece canister set.

For new and budding collectors, and seasoned veterans as well, Joel and Sharon have some guidance. “When you see something you like but are unsure, go with your gut and buy it, for it probably won’t be there when you return.” This auction gives collectors of all variety the opportunity to adhere to this sage advice and add to their collections.
