Oil on canvas, 30 x 25, in a giltwood and gesso reproduction frame.
Condition: Retouch to face, small areas in background, and to fill craquelure, particularly in the figure's jacket.
Note: A handwritten note on the medial stretcher reads in part: "Caleb Whitefoord/by Gilbert Stuart/The well-known Wit born in/Edinburgh 1734: Secretary to the/British Commission for making/Peace with America, 1782." Adjacent to the note is a 19th century label from famous British art dealers Thomas Agnew & Sons.
A portrait by Gilbert Stuart of this sitter is in the collection of the Montclair (New Jersey) Art Museum.
