The Gentleman's Auction Online
Description:
Harvard Campus Visitor's Map Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1961, reverse-painted acrylic and gold leaf on sturdy 1/4" plexiglass, 72 x 54 in.
Beautifully illustrated across twenty-seven square feet, the Harvard buildings shine in gold leaf against the translucent backing of this one-of-a-kind map. Each university building, street, and point of interest is clearly labeled by the artist to assist with navigation and nostalgia.
Provenance: Supposedly commissioned by the chief of the Harvard University Police Department, this map would have welcomed and guided visitors to the Ivy League campus from its painting in 1961 until it was reportedly taken down during a renovation in the 1980s. The lower right-hand corner bears the text "Copyright 1961 by the President and Fellows of Harvard College."
