Christian Hurtin No. 28 Surveyor's Compass, Goshen, New York, c. 1802, fully engraved 6-in. dia. four-point engraved rose with east-west reversed, fleur-de-lis representing north, blued needle, arrestor marked "W" for west, outer scale divided in four quadrants, marked "No. 28 C. Hurtin Goshen AD 1802," dovetailed sighting vane mounts, housed in its original pine fitted box, lg. 13 in.

Note: Christian Hurtin was a clock, watch and instrument maker in the 18th and 19th century in the New York area. There are three recorded examples of compasses by Hurtin, no. 8 dated 1788, no. 17 dated 1794 and no. 39 dated 1811.
