Signed "HWScott" lower right, inscribed "Western/Feb 21, 1942/1141-177" on the reverse, inscribed "No. 29" in red on the stretcher, with a gummed label inscribed "Western/Story" affixed to the back of the frame.
Oil on canvas, 28 x 26 in. (71.0 x 66.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Small paint loss to top edge at center right, areas of craquelure.
N.B. The lot is accompanied by a framed cover of Western Story magazine featuring this work. (Vol. 197, No. 6, February 21, 1942). The title given to this painting is derived from the cover description and is based on a story by Walt Coburn, "Three Tough Hands, Novel of Montana Territory."

What at first appears to be an abrasion on the upper left side in the horse's tail above the steer's head is actually white pigment
