Provenance: A Massachusetts estate.
N.B. As is typical, St. Augustine is presented here in the habit of a bishop, bearing a book and pen in reference to his writings. This work, with its strong directional lighting highlighting the figure emerging from a dark background and the twist of the pose is reflective of 17th century handling, found in the works of artists such as Claude Vignon (French, 1593-1670).

Diagonal surface crack measuring about 5 inches across the l.r. corner. Various surface imperfections from earlier restorations.
