Description:

British Military Carbine of Non-standard Pattern, c. 1760-1775, 37 1/16 in., .69 caliber round barrel with ring decoration at the breech, "[?]R" barrel maker's stamp, London Company of Gunmaker's proof marks, and engraved "No. 18"; pattern 1756 double bridled carbine lock with double line border engraving on the lock plate, cock and back of the steel, the pointed tail engraved "FARMER/1759" and with traces of crown over "GR" engraved below the pan and stamped crown broad arrow ownership mark, the inside surface of the lock plate stamped with a crown over "2" inspector's mark and with "VII" assembly number above the mainspring; walnut stock with carved plateau around breech plug tang, right side of butt stamped with crown over "GR" storekeeper's mark, indistinct mark stamped behind the trigger guard, "IF" stamped to the rear of the side plate, rammer channel appears to have two crown over crossed scepters marks stamped just forward of the entry pipe; brass furniture including a butt plate with short pointed tang, trigger guard with acorn finial, convex surface side plate with assembly number "VII" on the inner surface, thumbpiece, long first rammer pipe with flaring end, barrel-form second and third pipes and barrel-form entry pipe, and nose cap; with sling swivels; steel rammer with button head and threaded end, stamped in tiny letters/numbers below the head "No. 18," overall lg. 52 1/2 in.

Note: The "No 18" mark engraved on the top of the barrel is of a similar form found on other American Revolution-era muskets of American origin.
Estimate $2,000-4,000

Barrel with brown patina and overall fine pitting; lock with deep brown patina and light pitting; stock forend restored from between the third and entry pipe area forward, small triangular stock patch on the right side where stock meets the barrel above the entry pipe, stabilized crack on the left side of the stock behind the swell, small repaired crack in the forward part of the lock mortice, and there is an apparent wood pin through the stock above the trigger guard at about the thumb piece screw; sling swivels likely not original.
