British Dog's Head Infantry Hanger

Auction: Sale #3805B - 3805B Location: Marlborough Date / Time: October 29, 2021 10:00AM

British Dog's Head Infantry Hanger, mid-18th century, cast brass hilt with heart-shaped counter guard and tear drop quillon knuckle bow with evidence of single branches long ago removed, brazed construction seam above where the upper branch would have joined the knuckle bow, brass pommel/grip with central longitudinal construction seam, head with molded and coarsely chased details; slightly curved single-edge blade with two narrow fullers, blade lg. 27 7/8, overall lg. 33 in.

Note: By the American Revolution British infantry troops had largely given up carrying cumbersome swords that proved to be of limited use in battle. Some troops such as grenadiers and drummers, however, retained them as part of their armament and at least one "dog's head" hanger with a slightly more complex hilt design survives with markings connecting it with the grenadier company of the Tenth Regiment of Foot and may have been lost on April 19, 1775 during the British retreat to Boston.
Estimate $2,000-4,000

Hilt toned to a soft yellow color and tightly fit to the blade; blade toned to an overall gray/brown with areas of light underlying pitting, blade tip slightly blunt.
