Engraved Spencer Sporting Rifle, J.P. Gemmer, St. Louis, Missouri, late 1860s/early 1870s, 28 1/4 in., .54 caliber heavy octagonal barrel marked "J.P. GEMMER/ST. LOUIS" in front of the rear sight, on an unmarked Spencer receiver with elaborate scroll, buffalo, and stag engraving, adjustable sight, figured walnut stock with hickory rammer, overall lg. 47 3/4 in.

Barrel toned to a deep brown, other metal parts toned to a brown in the engraving, action is imperfect, hammer does not catch on half or full cock; cleaning rod has a "splinter" loss along the side in the center.
