Condition: Craquelure, retouch, minor losses.
Provenance: By descent in the family.
Note: John Crittenden was born September 10, 1787 near Versailles, Kentucky and studied law at Washington College and the College of William and Mary graduating in 1806 and passed the Kentucky bar the following year. In 1809, he became Illinois Territory's attorney general. He served in the Kentucky House of Representatives 1811-1817, and 1825-1827, the United States Senate 1817-1819, and 1835-1841, and as United States attorney for Kentucky 1827 to 1829. Crittenden served as attorney general in the cabinet of President William Henry Harrison. Crittenden served as governor of Kentucky 1848 to 1850, another term as attorney general 1850 to 1853, and again as senator from 1854 until 1861. Crittenden died in Frankfort, Kentucky on July 26, 1863.

There is craquelure and minor paint loss to both works. Each subject has a repaired puncture/small tear in its face. John has more extensive retouch to background (and more craquelure/flaking as well),Sara Lee with a repaired puncture u.r.
