After Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917)
Study of Legs and Arm Movements for a Dancer with a Tambourine, an image from Vingt Dessins, a portfolio of heliograph prints of twenty drawings. Signed "degas" within the matrix, with an embossed Goupil et Cie copyright stamp (see below) l.l. Photogravure, 10 x 12 1/4 in., framed. Condition: Sheet has slipped in its mat, not examine out of frame.
N.B. Embossed stamp reads: "Copyright 1897 by Jean Boussod, Manzi, Joyant & Cie." Boussod, Manzi, Joyant et Cie were fine art publishers, printers, and art dealers, founded in 1897 by Jean Boussod (1860-1907),Michel Manzi (1849-1915),and Maurice Joyant (1864-1930),all of whom had been associated with the firm of Goupil.
Boussod Manzi, Joyant & Cie published Degas: vingt dessins 1861-1896 in 1897 as a selection of drawings chosen by Degas to encapsulate his career as a draftsman. Manzi and Degas were friends, socially, and were also involved in business together. Manzi was an active collector of a number of Degas' works, owning twenty-three objects that were either part of his personal collection or part of the collection of Manzi, Joyant et Cie. For his part, Degas was closely involved in overseeing and assuring the quality of the reproductive works.
