George Nelson (1908-1986) for Herman Miller CSS (Comprehensive Storage System) Wall Unit, United States, c. 1960, three bays, walnut and aluminum, includes four uprights, ht. 88, an attached desk, ht. 29 3/4, wd. 60, dp. 20, two cabinets with sliding doors, ht. 14, wd. 33 1/4, dp. 12 3/4, nine shelves, ht. 3/4, wd. 32 1/2, dp. 12, and two lights, conical shade dia. 11 1/2, cylindrical light ht. 12 1/4 in.
Note: Nelson was an American industrial designer. While lead designer for the Herman Miller furniture company, Nelson and his design studio, George Nelson Associates, designed 20th-century modernist furniture. Ray and Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia, Richard Schultz, Donald Knorr, and Isamu Noguchi all worked for Herman Miller, under Nelson's supervision. He is considered a founder of American modernist design.
