Eight Marcel Breuer (Hungarian/American, 1902-1981) Cesca Armchairs by Stendig, United States, c. 1975, chromed steel, enameled wood, and woven wicker, with Stendig labels, ht. 31 1/2, wd. 23 1/2, dp. 21 1/2 in.

Note: Breuer studied art in Vienna and attended the Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar from 1920 to 1924, where he trained as a joiner. In 1925, he took over the management of the joinery workshop at the Bauhaus as a 'Young Master'. He developed pioneering tubular steel furniture designs for the Bauhaus Dessau. In 1928, Breuer left the Bauhaus and began designing for Thonet. He immigrated to America in 1937 and with help from Walter Gropius, became a professor of architecture at Harvard University. Subsequently, Breuer ran a joint architecture office with Gropius. Among his most famous designs are the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Breuer is considered one of the key figures in the history of architecture and design.
