Josef Hoffmann (Austrian, 1870-1956) Vanity with Mirror and Stool, Vienna, Austria, early 20th century, lacquered wood and mirrored glass, ht. 54, work surface ht. 29, wd. 23 1/4, dp. 18 1/4, conforming stool, stamped mark "11," ht. 18, dia. 15 in.
Note: Hoffmann graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 1895 where he studied under renowned Austrian architect Otto Wagner. In 1897 he joined the Vienna Secession along with the likes of Joseph Maria Olbrich and Gustav Klimt. Hoffmann designed all manner of consumer goods including dinnerware, tapestries, furniture, and lighting fixtures. This model was exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition.
