Dedham Pottery Golden Gate Plate, Dedham, Massachusetts, 1896-1929, with Hugh Robertson monogram, stylized view of the Golden Gate at San Francisco inscribed "Golden Gate SF," waves in cavetto with monogram "HR" for the maker, outer border with poppy flowers, reverse inscribed "Set by M. Shephard," pre-1929 stamp, impressed rabbit, dia. 10 in.
Note: Hugh C. Robertson was an American potter known for his glaze experimentation. Robertson apprenticed at the Jersey City Potter in 1860. In 1868, he worked in his father's shop in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 1872 this shop was incorporated into the Chelsea Keramic Art Works (CKAW). In 1888, while at CKAW, Robertson worked ceaselessly to reproduce Chinese sang de boeuf glaze. In 1891 he established Chelsea Pottery, in Dedham, Massachusetts, which became the Dedham Pottery Company in 1895.
