Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951)
Two Impressions of On the Redhead Grounds, 1924, proof A-6 and proof B-1 (Paff, 237). Both signed "FrankWBenson." in pencil l.l. and with pencil annotations l.l. Drypoints on laid papers (B-1 with J WHATMAN watermark),plate sizes 9 7/8 x 7 3/4 in. (24.8 x 19.6 cm),unmatted, unframed.
Condition: All edges deckled, minor soiling and fingerprints to margins and verso, B-1 with old hinges to verso, minor tear to upper margin, minor creasing from printing, and pale green staining to darkest areas of ink (more visible on verso).
Provenance: Descended within the family of the artist.
N.B. There were two proof states of this composition, designated A and B, before the published version. Many more shadows were added to the published state, creating a largely silhouetted effect on the ducks, and reeds were added to the left side.
