Biographical Sketch of John Hodges Jr. and Transcripts of His Civil War Letters,19th Century. Drafted by his mother likely in the late 1860s or 1870s, the eighteen-page biographical sketch describes Hodges' childhood, militia service with the Salem Light Infantry and service in the Civil War from April 1861 to his death at the Battle of the Crater, July 20, 1864; much of the detail about Hodges' service is taken from the transcriptions of approximately seventy-one of his letters home spanning May 1861 to July 1864.

Provenance: The Charles Foster Batchelder III estate, upstate New York, formerly of Natick, Massachusetts.

Note: John Hodges Jr. enlisted in the 8th Massachusetts militia in April 1861, was promoted to first lieutenant in the 19th Massachusetts Infantry in August 1861, major in the 50th Massachusetts and finally lieutenant colonel of the 59th Massachusetts Infantry.
