First edition, octavo, publisher's half leather and red boards with gilt spine stamping, frontispiece with tipped in oval portrait of Shaw, (losses to front hinge, front hinge weak, front leaves through page 2 detached),9 1/4 x 7 1/4 in.
Provenance: The Charles Foster Batchelder III estate, upstate New York, formerly of Natick, Massachusetts.
Note: Likely belonged to Dr. Lincoln Ripley Stone, Surgeon of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment and relative of the Batchelder family. Robert Gould Shaw was the Colonel of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, an all-black Union regiment.
