Gray, Emberry Cannon "Bee Ho Gray" (1885-1951). Gelatin silver print photograph of the performer dressed in western attire, the back of the image stamped "The Sommer Studio, Philadelphia, PA.," (corners of image rounded for mounting in an oval frame, image with small area of surface loss near the top),9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.
Note: Bee Ho Gray was born in present day Oklahoma on the Chickesaw Nation and grew up in a Native American community. He traveled with several Wild West shows performing complex rope and whip tricks, horse-riding stunts, knife throwing, and played the banjo - all skills he wove into his popular comedy routine. Later he spent many years as a Vaudeville performer and acted in several movies. This photograph was likely taken in late August of 1910 when he was performing at the Philadelphia Hippodrome.
