N.B. We would like to thank Lee Berthelsen, the artist's son and founder of The Johann Berthelsen Conservancy, LLC, for authenticating this work. Lee Berthelsen recalls that his father's early voice studio was located on Manhattan's Upper West Side; from his window the artist could look out upon Grant's Tomb and the tower of the Riverside Church. The use of impasto in this work is typical of paintings from the 1920s and 30s.
