Signed "Louis Verwee" l.r., identified, dated, and signed "...1879/L. Verwee" within a painted rectangle on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 18 1/8 x 13 in. (46.2 x 33.0 cm),in a period frame.
Condition: Minor retouch, subtle canvas rippling.
Estimate $800-1,200
Framed dimensions are 29 1/2 x 24 1/2 x 4 inches.
The inscription on the back, which is in English, reads, "This picture has been painted/to the order of M. D'huyvetler,.../Antwerp Belgium 1879/
Very minor lines of retouch above the hands and below the hands at the window sill, scattered pinpoint sized dots of retouch in the dress.
Canvas stencil from Deforge Carpentier on the reverse. The firm was active in Paris from 1858 to the late 19th century.
