Skinner is pleased to handle The Collection of Carl Crossman at auction this coming January. Carl was a charismatic and passionate personality well-known to many of us in the world of art and antiques. Carl was recognized for his remarkable eye for quality, and for his deep knowledge of the material he collected and studied. His collection is multi-dimensional, consisting of Asian Arts, American and European Paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, 19th century American and English Furniture and Decorative Arts, and other interesting objects of the world’s material culture. He wrote extensively on the early China Trade, and published the pioneering and definitive The Decorative Arts of the China Trade in 1972, which still stands as the most important resource in the field. He ran Child’s Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston for years, spent time at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was a guest appraiser on Antiques Roadshow for nearly a decade. In his impressive collecting, his important scholarly pursuits, and his contribution to the trade, Carl Crossman’s legacy is hard to match.
