Odella Chatel (American, Mid to Late 20th Century)

"Me and an African Voodoo man. I married him." Label affixed to the back and dated 1989. Gouache on paper, site size 11 1/2 x 11 1/2 in., framed.

Note: Odella Chatel has been compared to Cindy Sherman for her love of wigs and different characters she would embody. She was befriended by artist Carlota Duarte in the 1970s. She was then photographed and written about by Duarte and was published in Odella: A Hidden Survivor detailing Chatel's transient experiences from orphanages, to mental institutions, to public housing.
