N.B. With his carefully crafted dioramas and penchant for the uncanny, Gregory Crewdson's Natural Wonder series challenges the monotony of the American suburb. In the present work, an unsightly leg resting atop a smattering of bones stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding cheerfully vibrant butterflies and flowers. The image's ambiguity is characteristic of Crewdson's artistic output. His photography incites more questions than answers, perhaps most significantly, "what happened?," "what's happening?," and "what will happen next?"
