Description:

Northwest Coast Cloth Dance Robe, probably Kwakwaka'wakw, late 19th century, composed on a commercial wool (possibly Hudson Bay) blanket, decorated with a traditional family crest design, in the form of an appliqued "Tree of Life" in red wool trade cloth, outlined with circular mother-of-pearl shell buttons, with larger buttons on trunk and branches, framed by a line of buttons, with a border of red trade cloth, with fretwork button design and ornamented with asymmetrical plaques of abalone shell, with a patch of cloth at center top, with a Plexiglas box mount, 51 x 64 in.

Provenance: Private collection, Stowe, Vermont; reported to have belonged to George Hunt, Fort Rupert, British Columbia.
