Description:

Henry Scott (British, 1911-2005)

Crossing the Line
Signed "Henry Scott" l.r., titled on a presentation plaque, with a label from Waterhouse & Dodd affixed to the stretcher and frame.
Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (40.5 x 50.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Surface grime.

Provenance: Private collection, to Christie's, South Kensington, May 13, 1999; through to the current owner.

N.B. Noted marine painter Henry Scott was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.).
Estimate $3,000-5,000

Framed dimensions are 19 1/2 x 23 1/2 in. Canvas stencil from Winsor & Newton "HERGA" on the reverse.

The stetcher is inscribed in ink "Black Ball Clipper 'Ocean Chief.' In 1853 she was embayed in ice for three days in the southern ocean."

It seems that the Waterhouse & Dodd label recorded the title of this work incorrectly as "Blue Jacket Crossing the Line & Silver Seas." The same title appears on the Waterhouse & Dodd label on the second Henry Scott marine painting in this auction.
