Five Ray (1912-1988) and Charles Eames (1907-1978) for Herman Miller Shell Chairs, Zeeland, Michigan, mid to late 20th century, two upholstered armchairs and three side chairs, all with "H"-form base mounts, all with maker's mark in the mold, side chairs with patent labels, two side chairs with labels from Contemporary, Brookline, Massachusetts, ht. 31 1/2, wd. 24 3/4, 18 1/2, dp. 21 in.

Note: Bernice Alexandra "Ray" Kaiser and Charles Ormond Eames Jr. were an American married couple of industrial designers who made significant historical contributions to the development of modern furniture. Charles was the public face of the Eames office, but Ray and Charles worked together as creative partners and employed a diverse creative staff. In 1958, Herman Miller officially began mass production of Eames designs in Zeeland, Michigan. Today, Herman Miller, along with European counterpart Vitra, remain the only licensed manufacturers of Eames furniture and products.
