Signed and dated "L. Baudu/1849" l.r., identified on a fragmentary label from the Academie Française (see below).
Pastel on paper/board, sight size 21 3/4 x 17 in. (55.5 x 43.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Scattered abrasions along the perimeter, not examined out of frame.
Exhibitions: Troisième centenaire de l'Académie française, Biblioteque Nationale, Paris, June 1935, No. 337.
N.B. Arsène-Armand (dit Jules) Claretie was born in 1840, which would make him nine years old at the time of this portrait. He went on to a distinguished career in the arts, including Manager of the Théâtre-Français and member of L'Académie Française (1888).
