The small puncture referenced above is located at the outer edge of the stretcher and measures 1/8 inches. There are also some paint losses along that same edge, just above the puncture. What might be read as abrasions at the lower center edge is only some stray white brushstrokes.
The impasto is quite rich in this work, especially along the staircase where is approaches the fountain and in the flowers surrounding the fountain. The work is extremely dirty, and after cleaning the colors would brighten dramatically. There is varnish inconsistency and discoloration, more noticeable in the area above the signature on the lower right.
On the reverse there is a darkened area of the canvas forming a stripe about 5 inches wide along the right vertical edge on the side where the label is located. This stripe corresponds to the dirtiest area on the front of the canvas. The reverse also shows some spotting similar to foxing.
