James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903)
The Little Lagoon, 1879-80, third state of four (Glasgow, 216 iii/iv; Kennedy, 186 ii/ii). Signed with butterfly monogram and "...imp" l.l., monogrammed within the plate, label from Kennedy & Co., New York, affixed to the backing. Etching and drypoint on fine Japan paper, plate size 8 7/8 x 5 7/8 in. (22.4 x 14.8 cm),framed (unglazed).
Condition: Margins 1 1/2 inches or more, laid down, two concentric areas of light staining, pale water stain to right margin (just into image),minute printing flaw near lower edge, pencil annotations to margins, subtle rubs to upper and lower edges of margins.
Estimate $6,000-8,000
The sheet measures 12 5/8 x 8 7/8 inches. The flaw looks to have been caused by a fine fiber or hair left on the plate. The frame measures 16 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 1 inches.
