Paint-decorated Slant-lid Box Attributed to the Checkerboard Artist, probably Somerset County, Pennsylvania, second quarter 19th century, the shaped projecting backboard pierced with an oval, above a canted top with hinged lid opening to a well, with allover painted decoration in red, black, yellow, and dark green incorporating contrasting banding, checkerboard and scalloped patterning, and other geometric motifs, all with incised outlines, and with dark bordering in green and black ornamented with single lines of contrasting dots, (minor imperfections),ht. to top of backboard 5 1/2, overall wd. 12 3/4, overall dp. 7 3/4 in.

minor paint loss to front edge of top, very minor paint loss elsewhere, separation in bottom boards about 1 1/2 inches from front edge. scientific paint analysis carried out by SAFA in July of 2017 indicates that the pigments are consistent with the 19th century date of the box.
