Uncut Semi-formal Dragon Robe, China, late 19th century, fashioned as a table cover, embroidered with five dragons surrounded by stylized clouds, cranes, and bats, a wave and lishui border at each end in a variety of stitches including couching, satin stitch, and seed stitch, with contrasting trim, dia. 45 in.

Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
