Description:

Eugene Speicher (American, 1883-1962)

Reclining Nude. Signed "Eugene Speicher" l.l. Charcoal on paper/board, sight size 9 1/2 x 14 in., framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame.

Note: Eugene Speicher NA was an American portrait, landscape, and figurative painter. He was one of the foremost realists of his generation who closely upheld the mantel of his mentor, Robert Henri. Speicher was named an Associate of the National Academy in 1911 and an Academician in 1926. He also participated in independent exhibitions such as those of the MacDowell Club, which were small non-juried shows originated by Henri. Following the dissolution of the MacDowell Club effort, Speicher became involved with the New Society of Artists, another organization of similarly liberal views which also held alternative exhibitions. From 1911, Speicher began to receive a steady stream of significant awards, and his work was acquired by major art museums for their permanent collections.
