William Spratling (American, 1900-1967) Polka Dot Cuff Bracelet, Taxco, Mexico, c. 1960, rosewood inlaid with silver, maker's mark, interior cir. 6 3/4 in.

Note: William Spratling was a silver designer and artist, best known as "The Father of Mexican Silver." In 1931, Spratling re-established Mexico's silver industry in Taxco. Taxco was a traditional site of silver mines, but did not have a native silver-working industry. Spratling began designing works based primarily on pre-Columbian and traditional motifs, and hired local silversmiths to produce his designs. Many Mexican artisans who worked for Spratling went on to open their own successful enterprises. In 1952, after returning from Alaska, Spratling opened a small studio workshop at his ranch in Taxco el Viejo where he designed and produced silver jewelry and decorative objects.
