N.B. Liang Quan uses the traditional materials of Chinese ink wash painting to create his abstract collages. He adds color to strips of delicate xuan paper by brushing them with ink or washing them in tea, then lays the strips in an overlapping pattern. He experiments with symmetry and asymmetry to create subtle, meditative works that force the dichotomy between order and spontaneity.

An Associate Professor at the China Central Art academy in Beijing and a Professor of Fine Arts at the Shenzhen Painting Academy, Liang is considered one of China's most important contemporary abstract artists. His works have been exhibited worldwide, and are included in the permanent collections of the British Museum, the National Art Museum of China, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and the University of San Francisco.
