Oil on canvas, 18 x 30 in. (45.7 x 76.2 cm),framed.
Condition: Canvas deformation to l.l. corner.
Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection.
Estimate $2,500-3,500
Framed dimensions are 26 3/8 x 38 1/2 in.
Three small losses or similar in the upper right corner that appear to be old and have been varnished over. Under UV there is some general pale fluorescence on the surface that seems to be new varnish, with no retouch evident at all.
Reverse is also inscribed "GEORGE WHARTON JAMES COLLECTION" on the stretcher. George Wharton James (1858-1923) was an American popular lecturer, photographer, journalist and editor. After being ordained as a Methodist minister in England, he served in parishes in Nevada and Southern California, gradually beginning his journalism and writing career. He wrote more than 40 books and many articles and pamphlets on California and the American Southwest.
