N.B. Hoyningen-Huene served as chief photographer for French Vogue from 1925 to 1935, learning from Edward Steichen, Vanity Fair's chief photographer and occasional Vogue photographer, and mentoring Horst P. Horst, who replaced him at Vogue when he left for Harper's Bazaar. Horst's penchant for the classical and attention to lighting can be traced to the influence of Hoyningen-Huene, who was largely responsible for Horst's introduction into fashion photography and high society, effectively launching Horst's career. Model, romantic partner, collaborator, and lifelong friend, Horst inherited Hoyningen-Huene's collection and reproduction rights after his death. In the 1980s, Horst began printing select works of Hoyningen-Huene's along with his own work, such as Electric Beauty (Lot 111) and Hands Behind Buttocks (Lot 112) in the platinum palladium process. Magnified by the medium, the arresting luminosity captured by Hoyningen-Huene's and Horst's photographs creates shadows with striking depth and captivating tonality.
Estimate $3,000-5,000

There are some extremely subtle handling creases to lower margin of Backside. Torso has very minor crimps to some edges (see images) and a tiny (less than 1/8 inch) area of something sticky near one of the upper corners.
