Description:

Federal Shield-back Side Chair, the carving attributed to Samuel McIntire, the chair attributed to Jacob Sanderson, Salem, Massachusetts, c. 1791, the serpentine crest centering a basket of flowers issuing flowering vines with acorns, above five spindles terminating in a quarter-round carved with another basket of flowers, on overupholstered seat with serpentine front rail joining square tapering legs, ht. 38, seat ht. 18 in.

Provenance: Peter Sawyer Antiques, Exeter, New Hampshire, 2008.

Literature: An identical chair, in the collection of The Peabody Essex Museum, is illustrated and discussed in Dean Lahikainen, Samuel McIntire: Carving an American Style, Peabody Essex Museum, pp. 52-55.

Note: This chair, marked "IV" on the inside of the front and rear seat rails, may be from the same set as the PEM chair mentioned above.
